Seoul Samsung Appoints Kim Sang-shik as New Head Coach After Five Straight Last-Place Finishes
Seoul Samsung officially announced on the 16th the appointment of Kim Sang-shik as its new head coach, a move aimed at revitalizing a team that has endured five consecutive last-place finishes in the professional basketball league. The organization expressed high confidence in Kim, citing his extensive experience and leadership qualities.
The club highlighted Kim Sang-shik’s rich basketball philosophy and tactical acumen, developed through a long career as both a player and a coach. This background, they noted, has earned him significant trust both within and outside the organization. The team views his selection as a pivotal step toward systematic reconstruction and enhanced competitiveness, hoping his leadership will unite the squad and meet fan expectations.
Born in 1968, Kim’s journey in basketball began after graduating from Yangjeong High School and Korea University, joining Industrial Bank in 1991 as a player. Known for his exceptional three-point shooting and mobility, earning him the nickname ‘Mobile Missile,’ he later transitioned to coaching. His coaching resume includes roles as chief coach for Anyang SBS-KT&G, and head coach for Daegu Orion, and chief coach for Samsung.
Kim also led the South Korean men’s national basketball team from 2018 to 2021. Most recently, he returned to the league in 2022 as the 10th head coach for Anyang KGC, now known as Jung Kwan Jang, where he achieved a championship in his inaugural season, securing both the regular season title and the championship series.
