Wembanyama Inks Five-Year Extension, Prioritizing Spurs’ Financial Flexibility
San Antonio Spurs phenom Victor Wembanyama has reportedly agreed to a five-year, $252 million contract extension, a move that secures his future with the team while offering significant financial flexibility. The 22-year-old center, who just completed his third NBA season, could have potentially commanded a deal worth up to $303 million, but chose a lesser amount to benefit the franchise.
Wembanyama’s decision mirrors the approach taken by Jalen Brunson with the New York Knicks, a strategy credited with helping the Knicks defeat Wembanyama and the Spurs in the recent NBA Finals. By opting for the 25% maximum rookie-scale extension, rather than clauses that could have escalated his salary to a 30% supermax, Wembanyama is allowing the Spurs more room under the salary cap.
This financial maneuver will become particularly useful as teammates like Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper, currently on their rookie deals, become eligible for their own extensions in the coming years. Wembanyama’s new contract, which includes a player option in the fifth season, will begin in the 2027-28 season, following the final year of his initial rookie agreement where he will earn $16.9 million. His first year under the new deal is projected at $43.5 million, nearly $9 million less than a potential $52.2 million.
The 7-foot-4 French star is coming off an impressive third season where he led the league with 3.1 blocks per game, averaging career highs of 25 points, 11.5 rebounds, and 3.1 assists over 64 regular-season games. He also earned Defensive Player of the Year honors, becoming the youngest player to do so, with a unanimous vote. Despite his individual accolades, the Spurs fell to the Knicks 4-1 in the NBA Finals.
