Socceroos Midfielder Volpato Faces Cocaine Allegation After Sydney Speeding Incidents
Australian World Cup player Cristian Volpato has allegedly tested positive for cocaine following two separate speeding stops by police in Sydney. The 22-year-old midfielder, driving a BMW Coupe, was initially pulled over on Anzac Bridge late Thursday night for exceeding the 60km/h speed limit.
Police reports indicate Volpato was first stopped around 11:05 PM, traveling between 86-94km/h in a 60km/h zone. A roadside breath test for alcohol returned a negative result. However, approximately two hours later, at around 1:10 AM on Friday, he was stopped again on the same bridge, allegedly driving at 109km/h in the 60km/h zone, where a roadside drug test purportedly indicated the presence of cocaine.
As a result of these incidents, Volpato received an infringement notice for excessive speed, and his international driver’s license has been suspended for six months, preventing him from driving in New South Wales. New South Wales police have confirmed that inquiries are ongoing, with a secondary oral fluid sample taken for further analysis.
Volpato, who switched allegiances to Australia in May and featured in three of the Socceroos’ four World Cup matches, currently plays for Serie A side Sassuolo, making 24 league appearances last season. Football Australia has acknowledged the situation, stating they are in contact with the player and are monitoring the matter while offering support.
