Chelsea has finalized the acquisition of England midfielder Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for a British record transfer fee of £117 million. The 23-year-old signed a seven-year contract with the London club on Monday, following his return from England's World Cup campaign in the United States. This move, which comes as a significant surprise in the transfer window, saw Chelsea act swiftly after England's semi-final exit.
Rogers, who featured for England in their 2-1 semi-final loss to Argentina last Wednesday and the subsequent 6-4 victory over France for third place, underwent a medical in London before committing to the Blues. He expressed enthusiasm for the move, stating his belief that Chelsea is “the biggest club in London” and highlighting his admiration for the club since childhood. He also emphasized his eagerness to be part of the club’s future direction and to work with head coach Xabi Alonso, a key factor in his decision.
The transfer operation was reportedly a well-coordinated effort, involving Chelsea’s sporting directors, head coach Alonso, and co-owner Behdad Eghbali. Discussions unfolded rapidly after England’s World Cup run, with the deal being secured in under 48 hours. Captain Reece James and midfielder Cole Palmer, a close friend of Rogers, were also reportedly involved in advocating for the move.
Despite widespread expectations that Arsenal were the frontrunners for Rogers, Chelsea, having tracked him for over two years as a top attacking target, moved decisively. Rogers had been Aston Villa’s most valuable asset, and his departure represents a major shift in the Premier League landscape.
