Spain Coach Condemns Argentina’s “Intolerable” World Cup Final Conduct
Spain’s head coach, Luis de la Fuente, has strongly criticized the post-match behavior of Argentina’s players following the World Cup final, labeling their actions as “intolerable and unacceptable.” The Spanish side had just secured their second World Cup title with an extra-time goal from Ferran Torres when tensions flared.
FIFA has initiated an investigation into the incidents, which included Argentina’s Leandro Paredes receiving a red card for violent conduct after pushing and grabbing Spain’s Eric Garcia and Gavi. Nahuel Molina was also seen attempting to knock over Spain’s Rodri during celebrations, while Argentina coach Roberto Ayala has since apologized for trying to punch Dani Olmo.
De la Fuente initially stated he didn’t realize the extent of the aggression while celebrating with his team. However, upon reflection, he emphasized that such conduct from players of their caliber is inexcusable. He also commended his own squad for maintaining composure and behaving professionally in the face of these provocations.
Further adding to the contentious atmosphere, Lionel Scaloni’s Argentina squad reportedly turned their backs on Spain’s trophy celebration, despite Spain having formed a guard of honor for them as they walked to receive their medals. The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has appointed a prosecutor to delve into potential breaches of their disciplinary code regarding these post-match events.
