Barry’s Remarkable Ascent to England’s World Cup Semi-Final Coaching Staff

Anthony Barry, once a lower-league footballer at Accrington Stanley, is now a key figure on England’s coaching staff as they prepare to face Argentina in a World Cup semi-final. The match is scheduled for Wednesday at 20:00 BST, with England aiming to reach their first men’s World Cup final since 1966.

Barry, 40, has experienced a rapid rise in the football world. Just eleven years ago, in 2015, he was concluding his playing career with Accrington Stanley and beginning his coaching journey with their Under-16 team. His playing days largely involved the lower leagues, including being part of the Accrington Stanley squad that won the Conference title two decades ago, bringing the club back to the Football League after 44 years.

Now, he sits alongside head coach Thomas Tuchel, a partnership Barry describes as a “yin to Tuchel’s yang,” noting their height difference and varied backgrounds can appear unusual. Barry has become known for his no-nonsense half-time television interviews during the tournament. His extensive coaching resume includes stints at Chelsea, Bayern Munich, and with the national teams of Portugal and Belgium.

England’s encounter with Argentina marks another high-stakes moment for Tuchel’s squad, as they continue their pursuit of the World Cup final.
