Spain Claims World Cup Amidst Argentine Controversy and FIFA Investigation
Spain has been crowned World Cup champions for the second time, defeating Argentina 1-0 in a hard-fought final marked by extra-time heroics and post-match brawls. Ferran Torres netted the decisive goal in the 106th minute, denying Argentina a repeat of their 2022 triumph and leaving captain Lionel Messi to reflect on an “immense” pain after his second World Cup final loss.
The match at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, was not without its drama, both on and off the pitch. Messi, at 39, contributed eight goals and four assists throughout the tournament as Argentina reached their third final in four World Cups. However, their campaign concluded with controversy as FIFA launched an investigation into violent scenes following the final whistle. Argentina’s Leandro Paredes, who was shown a red card post-match, was seen grabbing Spain’s Eric García by the throat and throwing Gavi to the ground. Nahuel Molina also appeared to strike Spain’s captain Rodri.
Further complicating the event, UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin notably boycotted the final. His absence was a protest against several FIFA decisions, including an extended 27-minute, 22-second halftime show featuring acts like Madonna and Shakira, and FIFA’s intervention to prevent a suspension for US striker Folarin Balogun. Ceferin also opposes the potential expansion to a 64-team World Cup. Meanwhile, referee Slavko Vincic had already sent off Argentina’s Enzo Fernández during normal time and booked three other Argentine players, including head coach Lionel Scaloni, before the post-match incidents.
