Aston Villa Bolsters Midfield with £38m Gomes Acquisition
Aston Villa has finalized the transfer of midfielder Joao Gomes from Wolves in a deal valued at £38 million. The 25-year-old Brazil international, who departs Wolves after three and a half seasons, completed his medical and confirmed his move to Villa Park on Thursday. The agreement includes an initial £34 million fee, with an additional £4 million in potential add-ons.
Gomes’s arrival follows a period of significant midfield activity for Villa. The club recently secured Johan Manzambi from Freiburg in a record-breaking deal exceeding £50 million. These acquisitions come as Villa navigates the absence of Amadou Onana, who is sidelined until next year due to a serious knee injury sustained at the World Cup.
The transfer also coincides with notable departures from Villa’s midfield ranks. Youri Tielemans has moved to Manchester United for £35 million, and Morgan Rogers is reportedly nearing a £117 million transfer to Chelsea. Atletico Madrid had also shown interest in Gomes before his decision to join Villa.
During his tenure at Wolves, Gomes made 130 appearances and scored seven goals after joining from Flamengo in 2023. He played in 41 matches last season, earning the Player of the Year award, even as the team finished at the bottom of the Premier League table. Matt Jackson, Wolves’ technical director, praised Gomes, describing him as a “model professional” and an “outstanding player” whom both coaches and fellow players admire.
