Jones’s Liverpool Future Uncertain Amid Inter Interest and Post-Match Spat
Curtis Jones’s future at Liverpool is increasingly under scrutiny after a public disagreement with teammates following a 1-0 victory over Wrexham at Yankee Stadium on Thursday. The incident, which also involved Dominik Szoboszlai and Kostas Tsimikas, occurred as players applauded supporters after the final whistle.
The exchange grew heated, with Tsimikas filmed throwing the captain’s armband to the ground. Szoboszlai had given the armband to Tsimikas instead of Jones when substituted during the match, though the precise cause of the argument remains unclear. Szoboszlai later commented generally on team unity, stating, “we are all in the same boat and we want the best for the club and for each other.”
This comes as Italian champions Inter are intensifying their pursuit of the 25-year-old midfielder. Inter had an initial offer of £21.7 million rejected in June but are now reportedly prepared to increase their bid to £30 million. Liverpool, who value their player closer to €40m, have been in fresh contact with Inter’s representatives this week.
Jones has just one year remaining on his current contract at Anfield. Despite manager Andoni Iraola expressing a strong desire for Jones to stay, stating, “I rate Curtis very highly,” the ongoing transfer interest and the recent on-pitch tensions add layers of uncertainty to his position at the club. Liverpool will conclude their North American pre-season tour against Leeds in Chicago on Sunday.
