Nygren Header Seals Celtic Win, Tierney Shines in Season Opener

Celtic began their Scottish Premiership title defense with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Dundee, thanks to a header from Benjamin Nygren. The Sweden midfielder, who netted 21 goals last season, struck in the 52nd minute to secure the three points at home, following a pre-match flag unfurling by captain Callum McGregor celebrating the club's 14th title in 15 seasons.

Despite a somewhat flat first half where Martin O’Neill’s side struggled to find rhythm, it was the familiar attacking prowess of Nygren that ultimately made the difference. The winning goal came from a precise cross delivered by left-back Kieran Tierney, highlighting his significant contribution to the team’s offensive efforts.

Tierney, a key figure since Martin O’Neill’s return in January, showcased his influence throughout the match. He created four chances, more than any other Celtic player, and sent in eight crosses, the highest among his teammates. He also registered two shots on target and was praised for his energetic performance, reminiscent of his earlier form.

New recruits Camilo Durán and Kasper Høgh made their debuts for Celtic, with Høgh having an early chance in the ninth minute. However, it was the established connection between Tierney and Nygren that proved decisive in getting the champions’ season off to a winning start against a resilient Dundee side.
