FC Seoul solidified its position at the top of the K League 1 standings, extending their unbeaten streak to six matches with a decisive 3-1 victory over Pohang Steelers at Seoul World Cup Stadium on July 22nd. Forward Jeong Seung-won was the star of the night, bagging two crucial goals that ensured Seoul maintained a commanding 10-point lead over second-place Gangwon FC.
The 19th-round fixture saw both teams seeking an early advantage through rapid flank attacks. Pohang nearly broke the deadlock in the 20th minute when Trancisca’s left-wing drive set up Lee Ho-jae for a one-on-one chance, only for goalkeeper Gu Sung-yun to deny him. Seoul responded eight minutes later with a prime opportunity of their own; after Song Min-kyu intercepted a pass in the opponent’s territory, Jeong Seung-won’s quick shot was blocked by Pohang’s goalkeeper Hwang In-jae.
Seoul finally found the net in the 36th minute when Anderson delivered a cut-back from the left flank, allowing Climalá to score with a left-footed volley. Pohang equalized in the 56th minute after a corner kick, with Trancisca heading Ki Sung-yueng’s cross past the goalkeeper. However, Seoul quickly regained the lead in the 69th minute. Substitute Moon Seon-min, who entered the game just minutes earlier, delivered a sharp cross into the penalty box, which Jeong Seung-won met with his right foot to restore Seoul’s advantage. Jeong then sealed the win in the 88th minute, capitalizing on a cut-back from Lee Seung-mo after a corner kick.
The defeat marked Pohang’s second consecutive loss, leaving them in fifth place with 28 points. Despite the recent setbacks and numerous injured players, Pohang manager Park Tae-ha expressed confidence in his team’s tactical development and the performance of his younger players. He emphasized the importance of securing a victory in their upcoming home match against Jeonbuk Hyundai on July 25th, following a demanding 10-game road stretch. Meanwhile, league leaders FC Seoul, now with 13 wins, 3 draws, and 3 losses (42 points), will aim for a third consecutive victory when they host Ulsan HD on July 26th.
