European Football Union Threatens World Cup Boycott Over FIFA Investment Plans
The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has declared its strong opposition to FIFA's plans to establish a subsidiary for commercial ventures and sell stakes to private investors, threatening a boycott of the World Cup and other FIFA-sanctioned tournaments. This firm stance was announced on the 31st, following a unanimous rejection by UEFA and its 55 member associations.
UEFA emphasized that the World Cup, recognized as one of the greatest sports legacies, was built by athletes, national teams, and fans globally over generations. They argue that it should not be treated as a mere investment product or be put up for sale. The European body insists that unless FIFA makes a legally binding commitment to never again open its governance or tournament ownership to private entities, UEFA-affiliated national teams will not participate in any FIFA-organized competitions.
FIFA had previously announced on the 29th of last month its intention to create a subsidiary named ‘FIFA Forward Enterprises’ (FFE), which would manage the operational and revenue-generating aspects of the World Cup.
