Balogun’s Red Card Overturned, Sparking Controversy Ahead of US-Belgium Clash
United States star forward Folarin Balogun will be available for the World Cup Round of 16 match against Belgium on Monday after his one-game suspension for a red card was surprisingly lifted by FIFA. Balogun, the US’s leading scorer with three goals, was initially sent off during the team’s 2-0 victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina in the last-32 tie, a decision that has now been suspended for a probationary period of one year.
This highly unusual reversal has drawn significant attention, particularly given reports of lobbying efforts from US President Donald Trump to FIFA President Gianni Infantino. While the BBC has not confirmed these reports, other outlets indicate Trump made multiple calls to FIFA to advocate for the review. Trump himself posted on Truth Social, thanking FIFA for “reversing a great injustice.”
FIFA’s disciplinary committee cited Article 27 of its disciplinary code, which allows for the suspension of punishments, though it provided no further explanation. The rarity of such a decision has raised eyebrows, with the Royal Belgian Football Association expressing astonishment and investigating its options. Historically, only two players, including Brazil’s Garrincha in 1962, have had World Cup red card suspensions effectively overturned, with the 1962 decision also facing allegations of political interference.
The decision provides a significant boost for the US as they aim to reach the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time since 2002. Balogun’s teammates reacted with surprise and relief, with defender Chris Richards quipping, “I think a lot of us thought it was AI at first.” Forward Christian Pulisic felt the initial foul lacked intent and that justice had been served.
The probationary period means the red card technically remains on Balogun’s record. Should he commit a similar infringement within the next year, the suspension would be reinstated, in addition to any new penalties.
