Eddie Howe Departs Newcastle After Landmark Tenure
Eddie Howe has officially concluded his nearly five-year tenure as Newcastle United manager, departing the club on Thursday just weeks before the new Premier League season. His exit, described as amicable despite the abrupt timing following a 4-1 preseason friendly defeat to Bristol City, marks the end of a period that saw the 48-year-old become the team’s most successful manager. Reports suggest Howe sought to leave weeks ago, citing physical and mental exhaustion, potentially exacerbated by recent transfer difficulties.
Howe took the helm in November 2021 when Newcastle were 19th in the Premier League, five points from safety after 11 matches. He dramatically steered them to an 11th-place finish that season. His reign peaked with a fourth-place league finish in 2022-23 and secured a UEFA Champions League spot twice. The pinnacle of his achievement for many fans was ending the club’s 70-year trophy drought by winning the Carabao Cup in 2025.
However, the latter part of his time saw challenges. After finishing fourth, seventh, and fifth in successive seasons, the team ended last season in 12th place, a result considered a disappointment given prior successes. This downturn coincided with significant player departures, including Alexander Isak last year and Anthony Gordon this summer, and struggles with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules, which limited transfer activity.
During Howe’s overall tenure, only four clubs amassed more Premier League points, and only three had a better goal difference across 179 matches. Despite these statistics, the perceived underperformance last season and a shift in control over transfers reportedly caused frustration for Howe. Al-Ahli coach Matthias Jaissle is now expected to take over, returning to Europe three years after joining the Saudi side.
