Football World Mourns Loss of Legendary Defender Franco Baresi at 66
Franco Baresi, the iconic AC Milan and Italy defender widely celebrated as one of football's greatest, has passed away at the age of 66. Milan confirmed the news, emphasizing that his "example and integrity will be forever etched into the club's DNA," a sentiment echoed by countless fans and figures across the sport.
Baresi dedicated his entire two-decade playing career, from 1977 to 1997, to AC Milan. During his 719 appearances, he captained the club for 15 seasons, securing an impressive haul of six Serie A titles and three European Cups. His contributions were so profound that Milan retired his number six shirt upon his retirement. He was also a cornerstone of one of European football’s most formidable defenses, playing alongside talents like Paolo Maldini and Alessandro Costacurta.
On the international stage, Baresi earned 81 caps for Italy and was a member of the 1982 World Cup-winning squad. A remarkable moment in his career came during the 1994 World Cup final against Brazil. Despite undergoing surgery for a knee injury during the tournament, he made an incredible comeback to captain Italy in the final, largely neutralizing the threat of Romario and Bebeto in a match that ended 0-0. Although he missed Italy’s first penalty in the shootout that Brazil eventually won 3-2, his individual performance remains highly regarded.
His influence extended beyond his playing days, as he was made honorary president of Milan in 2020. The current Milan squad, under coach Ruben Amorim, observed a minute of silence in his honor during a preseason tour in Australia. Baresi had undergone surgery in August 2025 to remove a lung nodule, and his last public appearance was at the San Siro Stadium, carrying the Olympic flame for the Winter Olympics opening ceremony in February.
