Defensive Concerns Mount for Liverpool Despite Winning Start Under Iraola

Liverpool began the Andoni Iraola era with a 4-2 victory over Sunderland in Nashville, Tennessee, but the positive result was overshadowed by an early injury to defender Joe Gomez, intensifying worries about the team's depth at center-back. The match, played at Geodis Park, saw goals from Kieran Morrison, Dominik Szoboszlai, Federico Chiesa, and Lewis Koumas for Liverpool.

Gomez, who started the friendly as captain, left the field just eight minutes into the game, a blow that Iraola immediately highlighted. The new head coach expressed his disappointment, noting that the team had avoided injuries during training only to lose Gomez right away. Adding to the defensive woes, new signing Jeremy Jacquet was rested, and Virgil van Dijk was still absent after his World Cup duties.

This forced two 18-year-old debutants, Mor Talla N’diaye and Ifeanyi Ndukwe, into central defense until the 68th minute. While both performed admirably, Iraola had previously described his squad as “very thin” defensively.
