FIFA President Infatino to Avoid IOC Investigation Over Neutrality Concerns
Gianni Infantino, president of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA), will not face an investigation by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) regarding alleged violations of political neutrality. The IOC dismissed a complaint filed by the non-profit organization FairSquare, which had called for an inquiry into Infantino's conduct.
FairSquare, based in London, had requested the IOC investigate Infantino, citing statements and actions by the FIFA president that appeared to express support for then-U.S. President Donald Trump. The organization argued that these actions contravened the Olympic Charter’s stipulations on political neutrality.
However, an IOC spokesperson confirmed that its Ethics Commission reviewed the complaint and determined it fell outside its purview. The commission concluded that the grievances primarily concerned the governance, operations, relationships with governments, and application of rules by an International Federation (IF), including its president.
The spokesperson further clarified that such matters are not subject to the IOC Ethics Code. Consequently, the IOC stated that the complaint was “outside the jurisdiction of the IOC Ethics Commission.”
