The right-hander stifled the Baltimore lineup, allowing only three singles and two walks while striking out five, preventing any runner from reaching scoring position.
Melton’s dominant outing was complemented by a relentless offensive display from Detroit, which remarkably scored in every inning of the game. This historic feat marks only the second time since 1900 that a team has scored in every batting inning while also not conceding a run, echoing the Pittsburgh Pirates’ achievement in 1935 against the Brooklyn Dodgers.
Since returning from an elbow issue on May 24, Melton has been in exceptional form, posting a 1.75 ERA over eleven starts. His effectiveness against the Orioles was evident in his ability to get ahead of batters, throwing 16 first-pitch strikes to 24 hitters and limiting three-ball counts to just five. This outing showcased significant improvement after two consecutive starts with four walks.
The 25-year-old utilized his four-seam fastball for eight called strikes, effectively setting up his cutter for four of his eleven swinging strikes. His splitter, slider, and curveball also contributed to his strike count, highlighting a diverse and effective pitching arsenal that completely shut down the Orioles’ offense.
