Lakers Bolster Defense with Thybulle, Face Roster Decisions
The Los Angeles Lakers have reached an agreement on a one-year, $3.3 million contract with veteran wing Matisse Thybulle, a move reported on Monday, July 20. The acquisition, confirmed by ESPN, addresses the team's need for perimeter defense, though it also creates a roster crunch as the regular season approaches.
Thybulle, a two-time All-Defensive Second Team selection, is known for his disruptive defensive play, having averaged more than four combined steals and blocks per 36 minutes during his initial three seasons with the Philadelphia 76ers. His three-point shooting also showed improvement during his tenure with the Portland Trail Blazers. This signing, along with the earlier addition of Ziaire Williams, aims to fortify a defense that ranked 18th in efficiency last season, especially after the departure of Marcus Smart.
The 29-year-old’s arrival brings the Lakers’ roster to 16 players, with all now holding guaranteed contracts. While the offseason maximum is 21, the team must trim down to 15 by the start of the season. This situation suggests a trade is likely, as waiving a guaranteed salary is generally not preferred.
With Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves anchoring the backcourt, Thybulle’s defensive versatility is expected to complement their offensive strengths. His ability to generate turnovers and prevent drives will be crucial, aiming to alleviate pressure on new center Walker Kessler, who also recently signed a significant deal after being acquired via sign-and-trade.
