Iberian Derby Highlights World Cup Round of 16

The 23rd edition of the FIFA World Cup, hosted in North America in 2026, has concluded its 32-team group stage and is now set for the Round of 16. The initial phase ran from the 29th of last month to the 4th, narrowing the field to 16 contenders.

Among the matchups drawing significant attention is the Iberian derby between Portugal and Spain, scheduled for July 7th at 4 AM in Dallas, USA. This clash features Portugal, led by star player Cristiano Ronaldo, against their regional rivals.

Historically, Spain holds an advantage over Portugal, with 18 wins, 16 draws, and 7 losses in 41 previous encounters. Spain also boasts a stronger record in major international tournaments, including a World Cup victory in 2010 and four European Championship titles (1964, 2008, 2012, 2024). Portugal’s best World Cup finish was third place in 1966, alongside one European Championship title.

The Round of 16, which began on the 5th and concludes on the 8th, will feature several compelling contests as teams like Germany, Japan, Croatia, and Cape Verde have already been eliminated. The Spain-Portugal game is anticipated as one of the standout fixtures of this stage.
