England Claims Third Place in World Cup Thriller, Saka Hat-Trick and Bellingham Record Mark Victory
England secured their best World Cup finish since 1966, defeating France 6-4 in a captivating third-place play-off in Miami. Bukayo Saka netted a hat-trick for England, while Jude Bellingham broke an individual scoring record with his late strike.
The first half saw England dominate, racing to a 4-0 lead through Declan Rice’s opener, Ezri Konsa’s header, and a quick brace from Saka. However, France mounted a spirited comeback after the break, with Kylian Mbappe scoring twice and Bradley Barcola adding another, narrowing the deficit significantly.
Despite France’s resurgence, including a 96th-minute goal from Ousmane Dembele, England held firm. Saka completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot in the 87th minute, after Djed Spence drew a foul. Bellingham, introduced in the 79th minute, scored with the game’s final kick, marking his seventh goal of the tournament and surpassing the previous England record of six goals in a single World Cup held by Gary Lineker and Harry Kane.
Bellingham’s record-breaking goal came after he had deferred a penalty opportunity to Saka, allowing his teammate to secure his hat-trick. The match, a ten-goal thriller, ultimately saw England clinch third place.
