Chelsea Secures Rogers in Club-Record £117m Deal

Chelsea has reached an agreement to acquire England midfielder Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa in a club-record £117 million transfer. The 23-year-old is set to sign a six-year contract, with an option for an additional year, and will undergo a medical examination on Monday following his return from international duty with England at the World Cup.

This monumental deal establishes Rogers as the most expensive player in Chelsea’s history, surpassing the £107 million paid for Enzo Fernandez in 2023. It also sets a new transfer record for an English player, eclipsing the £116 million fee Manchester City recently agreed for Elliot Anderson. The move is a key acquisition for new Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso as he molds his squad ahead of the upcoming Premier League season.

Rogers, who was previously part of Manchester City’s youth system, joined Aston Villa from Middlesbrough in February 2024 for an initial £8 million, a figure that could rise to £15 million. Middlesbrough stands to gain at least £20.4 million from this transfer due to a 20% sell-on clause on any profit Villa makes, a sum believed to be an English record for a transfer sell-on fee.

The attacking midfielder was a critical component of Villa’s success last season, contributing 14 goals and 12 assists across all competitions as the team secured a Europa League title and reached the Champions League. He was also a key player for England in the World Cup, notably assisting the opening goal in their semi-final match against Argentina. Alonso had identified Rogers as a top target, and despite interest from other clubs like Arsenal, Chelsea moved swiftly to finalize the deal.
