Chelsea Bolster Attack with Veteran Striker Danny Welbeck
Chelsea has officially secured the services of veteran striker Danny Welbeck, with the 35-year-old signing a two-year deal at Stamford Bridge. The move, reportedly valued at £5 million, marks a notable shift in Chelsea’s recent transfer strategy, which has largely focused on acquiring younger talent since the ownership change in 2022.
Welbeck arrives from Brighton where he enjoyed a standout season, netting a career-high 13 league goals in 37 appearances, a tally surpassed by only three other English players in the Premier League. Notably, three of those goals came against his new club. The former Manchester United and Arsenal forward is set to join manager Xabi Alonso’s squad on their pre-season tour.
This signing represents Chelsea’s third acquisition of the summer, following Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa and Marco Palestra from Atalanta. Welbeck’s arrival brings valuable experience to the squad, a quality Alonso was reportedly keen to add after the team’s 10th-place league finish last season.
Expressing his enthusiasm, Welbeck stated, “When you hear of the interest from Chelsea, it’s something that fills you with such immense pride.” He added, “I’ve got that fire in my belly and I’m ready to give it everything for this club to make everyone at Chelsea, and the supporters, proud.” His transfer is the first time Chelsea has paid a fee for a player over the age of 26 since acquiring Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in 2022.
