LeBron James, the NBA's all-time leading scorer and a four-time champion, announced Friday his intention to sign with the Philadelphia 76ers. The 41-year-old made his decision public on social media platform X, with the news also confirmed by an NBA insider. This move marks a significant shift for the 76ers, now considered a strong contender for the 2027 title.
James reportedly agreed to a two-year deal valued at $8 million. This follows his eight seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers, where he earned a base salary of $52.6 million last season. James indicated that while he had contemplated retirement after the previous season, a break rekindled his desire to return for a 24th NBA season. He stated his motivation was not financial or familial, but a drive to compete, win, and pursue another championship.
The addition of James significantly bolsters the 76ers’ roster, which is projected to be one of the league’s most formidable. He will join a lineup that includes Joel Embiid, Jaylen Brown, Tyrese Maxey, and VJ Edgecombe. Some analysts suggest this could be the deepest roster James has ever played on.
Before James’ arrival, the 76ers’ chances for the Finals were lower, but immediately after the announcement, their standing improved. Philadelphia is now considered a strong contender to win the Eastern Conference, trailing only the defending champions. In the broader championship picture for 2026-27, the 76ers are now seen as a top contender, behind only a few other prominent teams.
