Zidane Takes Reins as France Head Coach After Deschamps’ Departure
Zinedine Zidane, a legendary figure in French football, has been officially named the new head coach of the France national team. His appointment follows the conclusion of Didier Deschamps’ extensive 14-year tenure, which saw France reach the semi-finals of the 2026 World Cup before exiting to Spain and ultimately finishing fourth in the tournament.
The 54-year-old Zidane, widely regarded as France’s greatest player, will lead the nation through the 2030 World Cup qualifiers under a new contract. He returns to management after his second stint as head coach at Real Madrid concluded in 2021. French Football Federation (FFF) president Philippe Diallo described Zidane as a “legend” of French football, expressing immense pride in the appointment. Diallo noted that discussions with the 1998 World Cup winner began in February 2025, shortly after Deschamps announced his intention to step down.
Zidane expressed profound joy and pride in taking on the role, stating there is “nothing greater than the French national team.” He acknowledged the responsibility that comes with the position and extended thanks to the FFF leadership for their confidence, while also recognizing Deschamps’ significant contributions. The anticipation for Zidane’s arrival was palpable, with crowds and numerous journalists gathering for his unveiling, a moment L’Équipe newspaper heralded with the headline “Il revient” – “He’s back.”
