TITLE: South African World Cup Midfielder Jayden Adams Dies at 25
Jayden Adams, the 25-year-old midfielder for South Africa and Mamelodi Sundowns, has passed away, just weeks after representing his country in the World Cup. Police in South Africa have opened an investigation after the body of a 25-year-old man was found at a house in Schotschekloof, a suburb in central Cape Town, on Saturday morning.
Adams featured in all three of South Africa’s group stage matches at the World Cup. He started in the opening 2-0 defeat by Mexico and the 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic. He came off the bench in the 1-0 victory over South Korea, but did not participate in the 1-0 last-32 defeat by co-hosts Canada. He made his national team debut in 2022.
Gayton McKenzie, South Africa’s minister of sport, arts, and culture, expressed profound shock, stating that the nation had lost “one of its brightest young talents.” He appealed for privacy and restraint from speculation regarding the cause of death, noting that official information would be released by appropriate parties. The South African Football Players Union also conveyed its devastation over Adams’ untimely passing.
