This pursuit of Welbeck aligns with comments made by influential owner Behdad Eghbali in April, suggesting a need to “tweak” the club’s model of signing primarily young talent. The potential arrival of Welbeck, known for his consistent goal-scoring in the Premier League, would add a physically imposing, seasoned presence to the squad. This move also casts further doubt on the futures of younger Chelsea forwards such as Nicolas Jackson, Liam Delap, and Marc Guiu, with Jackson reportedly open to leaving despite returning from a loan spell.
Meanwhile, Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has outlined his plans for new club record signing Morgan Rogers, who joined from Aston Villa for £117 million. Alonso expressed confidence that the 24-year-old midfielder, now the most expensive British player in history, will make an “instant impact” despite not yet joining pre-season training due to his World Cup commitments with England. Rogers has signed a six-year contract with an option for a further year.
Alonso specifically addressed how Rogers will integrate with fellow England international Cole Palmer, stating he has a “plan” and envisions them linking “really well” on the pitch. The two players share a close friendship, with Rogers previously expressing a desire to play alongside Palmer. This strategic acquisition of Rogers, alongside the pursuit of Welbeck, illustrates Chelsea’s evolving transfer approach to balance high-potential youth with proven Premier League experience.
