Woking Director Details “Growing Concerns” Leading to Defoe’s Departure
Woking director of football Jody Brown has shed light on the circumstances surrounding Jermain Defoe’s recent exit as manager, citing “growing concerns” from various club departments and an alleged failure by Defoe to attend a crucial meeting and training session. Defoe, 43, and the National League club “mutually agreed to part ways” earlier this week after just four months and six league games in charge.
Brown, who took responsibility for Defoe’s initial appointment, stated that while Defoe publicly and privately expressed enthusiasm, feedback from players, staff, and other areas of the club indicated increasing issues. Brown requested a report from Defoe and assistant Paul Bracewell detailing squad depth, recruitment targets, and operational challenges to offer support, but this report was never submitted despite multiple requests.
The situation escalated when Defoe and Bracewell reportedly did not attend a scheduled meeting with directors and the head of operations, nor did they appear for that day’s training session. This came two weeks before Woking’s first match of the new season against Sutton United.
Defoe, in his inaugural managerial role, oversaw two wins and one defeat in six matches. He described his time at the club as “eye-opening” and stated it was “impossible for me to continue,” though Brown noted Defoe had never directly communicated serious concerns to him.
