Veteran Referee Anthony Taylor Hangs Up His Whistle After Two Decades
Anthony Taylor, one of England’s most recognized football officials, has announced his immediate retirement from refereeing, citing the “intense pressure” and “constant scrutiny” of the role. The 47-year-old’s distinguished career spanned 20 years and included 831 matches, concluding with the World Cup last-16 fixture between Spain and Portugal on July 6.
Taylor’s journey in professional football officiating began with his inclusion on the Football League list for the 2006-07 season. He ascended to the Premier League in 2010, where he oversaw 432 top-flight matches and officiated every major domestic cup final, including the FA Cup finals in 2017 and 2020. In total, he managed 668 professional matches within England.
Beyond the domestic stage, Taylor was a prominent international referee, spending 14 years on FIFA’s list. He officiated 163 international matches, with selections for the 2022 World Cup and the Euros in 2020 and 2024. His final international assignment was one of five World Cup matches he refereed.
The Wythenshawe-born official reflected on his career, stating, “Officiating at the elite level has been an immense privilege, but the pressure is intense and the scrutiny is constant. The time is now right to step aside and look forward to transitioning to the next chapter of my career.” He also acknowledged the unwavering support from his family, friends, and colleagues throughout his demanding career.
