Ferguson Praises Kevin Keegan’s Impact at Newcastle

Sir Alex Ferguson has offered a heartfelt tribute to former rival Kevin Keegan, who passed away on Monday at 75. Ferguson, the legendary Manchester United manager, credited Keegan with building Newcastle United’s “greatest team” during his tenure.

Ferguson expressed his “utmost respect” for Keegan, recalling their intense managerial duels, particularly during the 1995-96 season when Manchester United famously edged out Newcastle for the Premier League title. Speaking to Track Radio, Ferguson highlighted Keegan’s “fantastic” work in revitalizing the Tyneside club.

Keegan’s first period as Newcastle boss, from 1992 to 1997, saw him guide the team to Premier League promotion in the 1992-93 season. He then led them to a runner-up finish three years later. Ferguson noted Keegan’s ability to “re-energise that club” and infuse it with enthusiasm, bringing in players like David Ginola, Faustino Asprilla, and Philippe Albert, who “added a bit of class to the team.”

Ferguson also remarked on Keegan’s visible passion for the game, stating he “carried the love of the game on his sleeve.” This passion, Ferguson observed, resonated with both fans and players. Despite the famous “I will love it if we beat them” outburst from Keegan during their fierce title race, Ferguson maintained admiration for the impressive rebuilding job Keegan accomplished at Newcastle.
