South African Midfielder Jayden Adams Dies at 25
Jayden Adams, a 25-year-old midfielder for the South African national football team, has passed away. Multiple international news outlets, including The Guardian and BBC, reported his death on Thursday, citing a statement from the South African Football Players Union.
Adams had recently played against the South Korean national team in a Group A match for the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers. He entered that game in the 34th minute of the second half as a substitute for Relebohile Mofokeng. This match ultimately marked his final appearance on the field.
The midfielder, who played professionally for Mamelodi Sundowns in South Africa, had started in his national team’s first two group stage matches. While he was on the bench for South Africa’s subsequent 0-1 loss to Canada, which eliminated them from the tournament, he did not play in that fixture.
The cause of Adams’ death has not been disclosed. A spokesperson, speaking on behalf of his family, has requested privacy.
