Argentina Prepares for Quarterfinal After Dramatic Comeback
Argentina is set to face Switzerland in a World Cup quarterfinal match on Saturday in Kansas City, following a dramatic come-from-behind victory in the previous round. The defending champions secured their spot after a late surge against Egypt in the Round of 16.
Against Egypt, Argentina found themselves down by two goals and on the verge of elimination before Lionel Messi orchestrated a three-goal swing in just over ten minutes. This emotional win saw Messi, his teammates, and coach Lionel Scaloni visibly moved, with Scaloni himself dubbed “el llorón” by his players. Messi has been a formidable force throughout the tournament, leading the Golden Boot standings with eight goals in five matches.
The path to the quarterfinals for Argentina has been marked by both brilliance and vulnerability, as evidenced by close contests against teams like Cape Verde and Egypt. Switzerland, on the other hand, advanced methodically, winning their group, then defeating Algeria 2-0 in the Round of 32, and overcoming Colombia in a penalty shootout in the Round of 16.
The quarterfinal clash is scheduled for a 9 p.m. ET kickoff in Kansas City.
