Yankees Bolster Offense with Acquisition of Luis García Jr. from Nationals
The New York Yankees have secured infielder Luis García Jr. from the Washington Nationals in a move aimed at injecting much-needed left-handed power into their lineup. The deal, which was reported Sunday, sees four right-handed pitchers heading to Washington: Jake Bird, Yovanny Cruz, Jack Cebert, and Ben Grable.
García, a 26-year-old New York native, is in the midst of a career-best season, boasting 23 home runs and 76 RBIs. His .283/.313/.560 slash line and .873 OPS highlight his offensive surge, particularly his 18 homers in his last 47 games. The Yankees are looking to utilize García primarily at first base or as a designated hitter against right-handed pitching, with a potential platoon alongside Paul Goldschmidt at first. This acquisition addresses a significant offensive struggle for the Yankees, who have averaged just 3.94 runs per game since June 1.
In return, the Nationals receive a quartet of pitchers. Jack Cebert, a 24-year-old Double-A starter, is a notable prospect, ranked as the Yankees’ No. 14 prospect by MLB Pipeline and now the Nationals’ No. 14. He holds a 4.03 ERA with 96 strikeouts over 82 ⅔ innings this season. Ben Grable, 24, a Double-A reliever, is another promising arm, striking out 56 batters in 36 ⅔ innings. Major league relievers Jake Bird, 30, and Yovanny Cruz, 26, complete the package for Washington.
