Skubal Dominates Royals as Tigers Secure Narrow Victory
Tarik Skubal delivered a masterful performance for the Detroit Tigers on Friday, July 24, at Comerica Park, striking out a season-high 12 batters over 7⅓ innings in a tight 2-1 victory against the Kansas City Royals. This win, witnessed by a sellout crowd of 40,638, moved Detroit to 50-54, their closest to .500 since May 12, and marked their 12th victory in 16 games. The Tigers now sit within six games of first place in the American League Central.
Skubal’s efficiency was on full display as he navigated 91 pitches, adding another impressive outing to his resume. He notably struck out Carter Jensen and Vinnie Pasquantino three times each, and Lane Thomas twice. This outing extended Skubal’s scoreless streak against the Royals to 20 consecutive innings, surpassing Milt Wilcox for a new team record.
The Tigers’ offense provided just enough support in the first inning. After Beck Way opened for the Royals, the bases were loaded by two singles and a hit-by-pitch. Riley Greene hit a ball that Isaac Collins brought back for a sacrifice fly, and Hao-Yu Lee followed with an RBI single, accounting for Detroit’s two runs.
Despite the loss, Royals pitcher Noah Cameron, who entered the game with a higher ERA and WHIP this season, found a rhythm after Way’s early exit. Cameron pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing only two hits and three walks while striking out eight. He notably reduced his four-seam fastball usage and incorporated his cutter more frequently, even against left-handed batters, a significant change from his typical approach.
