Chelsea Bolster Squad with Seven-Year Deal for Argentina International Barco
Chelsea has finalized the acquisition of Argentina international Valentín Barco from Strasbourg, signing the versatile player to a seven-year contract. This move adds a left-back who can also operate in central midfield to manager Xabi Alonso’s roster as the club continues its active summer transfer period.
Barco, who is 22 years old, is expected to link up with his new teammates on their pre-season tour, which includes stops in Australia and Hong Kong, where they are slated to play Juventus on August 5. He becomes the eighth arrival of new manager Xabi Alonso’s reign, joining a list that includes Danny Welbeck, among others, as part of Chelsea’s ongoing squad adjustments.
The Argentine was part of his national squad that reached the World Cup final, where they were runners-up. He earned his fifth cap during a 3-1 group stage victory over Jordan. Post-semifinal, following Argentina’s 2-1 win over England in Atlanta, Barco was involved in a notable exchange with England’s Jude Bellingham, who appeared to clip Barco around the head. Barco had run onto the pitch to celebrate an equalizer during the game, despite being an unused substitute.
Barco’s career path saw him emerge from Boca Juniors’ academy before joining Brighton in 2024 for £7.9 million. He spent a year on the south coast, making seven appearances for Brighton, including six in the Premier League during the 2023-24 season. He then moved to Strasbourg on loan in 2025, signing permanently later that year after helping the French side qualify for the Conference League, accumulating 54 appearances for the Ligue 1 club. This marks the second player this summer to transfer from Strasbourg to Chelsea, continuing a pattern of deals between the two clubs, both under the ownership of Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital.
