Infantino’s Leadership Under Scrutiny Following Failed Investment Plan

Gianni Infantino’s tenure as FIFA president is facing significant challenges after his proposal to sell stakes in FIFA competitions to private investment firms met widespread opposition, culminating in a humiliating retreat on Saturday morning. The plan, reportedly initiated without the knowledge of other key football bodies, has triggered calls for a leadership review and expressions of no confidence from major confederations.

The backlash against Infantino’s plan was swift and severe. UEFA, a long-standing critic, threatened to boycott all FIFA competitions, including the World Cup, and subsequently issued a strong statement declaring a loss of confidence in his leadership. Concacaf, which collaborated with Infantino on the 2026 World Cup, has also called for a “full review” of FIFA’s leadership, while even traditionally loyal countries within the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) distanced themselves from the president.

Further compounding Infantino’s woes, two of his closest allies, senior adviser Carlos Cordeiro and chief operating officer Kevin Lamour, have abandoned him. The combined pressure from these powerful entities and key personnel has placed Infantino’s position under severe threat, with many viewing this as a critical opportunity for a leadership change within global football’s governing body.
