Trade Deadline Looms as Teams Weigh Veteran Pitchers and Outfielders
With the August 3rd trade deadline fast approaching, Major League Baseball teams are actively engaged in negotiations, highlighted by the New York Mets scratching right-hander Freddy Peralta from his scheduled start on Friday. This move signals intensifying trade discussions for the pitcher, just days before the deadline.
Peralta, who was slated to pitch against the Marlins, has drawn significant interest despite a 7.34 ERA over his last nine outings. Interim manager Andy Green indicated that talks had reached a “prudent path” level, necessitating the scratch. Several contenders, including the Braves, Brewers, Cubs, Diamondbacks, Rays, Phillies, and White Sox, are reportedly seeking starting pitching, with Peralta and teammate Clay Holmes among the top available options as they near free agency.
Meanwhile, the Kansas City Royals, holding a 46-64 record, appear poised to retain their pitchers, Michael Wacha and Seth Lugo, both signed through next season. The organization has reportedly informed teams they are not in a rebuilding phase and intend to contend next season, opting to hold onto their experienced arms.
The Baltimore Orioles, while not definitively sellers, could make left fielder Taylor Ward available if they decide to move pieces. Ward, a free agent after the current season, is hitting .248/.383/.426 with seven homers, 20 doubles, 30 RBI, and 64 runs scored. His market is reportedly robust, with teams like the Yankees, Phillies, Rangers, and Guardians seeking outfield help. Orioles president Mike Elias also indicated an open-minded approach regarding catcher Adley Rutschman, though expressing a desire to keep him long-term.
