Orioles’ Playoff Hopes Dim After Loss to Cubs, Upcoming Game Rescheduled

TITLE: Orioles’ Playoff Hopes Dim After Loss to Cubs, Upcoming Game Rescheduled
The Baltimore Orioles’ postseason aspirations took another hit on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, with a 9-7 defeat against the Chicago Cubs at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. This loss, following an opening game defeat in the series, further jeopardizes their already slim chances of making the playoffs.

The Orioles initially grabbed a two-run lead thanks to Pete Alonso’s bat. However, pitcher Dean Kremer struggled, surrendering three home runs in the fifth inning alone. The Cubs then exploded for five more runs in the seventh, building a lead that Baltimore’s late rally couldn’t overcome. Kremer’s difficulties began in the third, giving up a solo shot to Pete Crow-Armstrong, and continued with back-to-back homers in the fifth from Michael Conforto and Carson Kelly.

Despite the pitching woes, Baltimore’s offense showed flashes of life. Blaze Alexander and Jackson Holliday set up a scoring opportunity in the fourth, leading to a tying run. Alonso then blasted a two-run homer to give the Orioles a temporary lead. Dylan Beavers was caught trying to steal second in the second inning, and Adley Rutschman caught a runner stealing in the fourth.

Looking ahead, the Orioles’ Thursday game against the Cubs, originally slated for 6:35 p.m. ET, has been moved to 1:35 p.m. ET due to anticipated inclement weather. Gates will open at 1 p.m. for the rescheduled afternoon contest, and tickets for the original time will remain valid. Christian Faith Night, previously scheduled for Thursday, has been postponed to August 20.
