Manchester United Bolster Midfield with Santos Signing, Pursue Tielemans

Manchester United has officially secured the services of Brazilian international Andrey Santos from Chelsea in a deal valued at £48 million, potentially rising to £50 million with add-ons. This marks the first permanent acquisition under head coach Michael Carrick, as the club continues its efforts to reshape its midfield.

Santos, a 22-year-old midfielder, has committed to Old Trafford until June 2031, with an option for an additional year. Director of Football Jason Wilcox lauded Santos as a key target, highlighting his technical prowess and leadership abilities despite his youth. Santos himself expressed excitement about joining a club represented by his idols and learning from Carrick, whom he sees as the ideal mentor for his career progression.

While the Santos deal is complete, United are also in advanced discussions to bring Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa. The 29-year-old Belgian international, who captained his country at the World Cup, is believed to have a £35 million release clause. This pursuit follows the temporary halt of a potential £35 million move for Atalanta’s Ederson, after a medical examination revealed an injury concern, though a return to negotiations for Ederson before the transfer window closes remains a possibility.

Santos’s arrival, following a season where he made 43 appearances for Chelsea and contributed to their 2025 Club World Cup victory, signals a clear intent from United to fortify their central ranks. With the departure of Casemiro and the ongoing search for reinforcements, the club is actively pursuing multiple options to enhance its midfield department.
