Italian FA Confirms Talks with Guardiola, Financial Flexibility on Offer

The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has confirmed discussions with Pep Guardiola regarding the vacant head coach position for the national team. Federation president Giovanni Malago indicated that "exceptions" could be made to accommodate the former Manchester City manager's salary.

Guardiola departed Manchester City this summer after a decade that saw him secure six Premier League titles, three FA Cups, five League Cups, and the Champions League. His availability follows the resignation of Gennaro Gattuso in April, a move prompted by Italy’s failure to qualify for its third consecutive World Cup.

Malago, in an interview with Cronache di spogliatoio, acknowledged the talks and the potential for financial adjustments for a candidate of Guardiola’s stature. While confirming the interest, Malago also cautioned that a final agreement is not guaranteed.

Other names reportedly under consideration for the role include Roberto Mancini, who guided Italy to Euro 2020 success, and Andrea Pirlo, currently managing Dubai United. Malago clarified that while these individuals fit the desired profile, they are not the only candidates being reviewed.
