Arsenal’s Saliba Sidelined with Back Injury After World Cup Strain
Arsenal will be without defender William Saliba for an extended period as he recovers from a back injury sustained during the World Cup. The 25-year-old center-back had been managing the issue for several months, carrying it into the tournament with France, where he ultimately had to leave their semi-final match against Spain after just 30 minutes.

Upon his return to London, specialist reviews confirmed the back injury. While surgery is not deemed necessary, Saliba will undergo a managed recovery program. The injury also forced him to miss France’s bronze final defeat to England.

Saliba had previously acknowledged playing through minor discomfort, stating he was “gritting his teeth” due to the importance of the Champions League, Premier League, and the quadrennial World Cup. Last season, he was a key figure for Arsenal, making 50 appearances across all competitions as the club secured the Premier League title and reached the Champions League final.

Mikel Arteta’s side is set to face Manchester City in the Community Shield on August 16, followed by the start of their Premier League title defense against promoted Coventry City five days later.
