Xabi Alonso’s first match at the Chelsea helm proved to be a high-scoring affair, with the Blues securing a 6-4 pre-season victory over Western Sydney Wanderers thanks in large part to a nine-minute hat-trick from substitute Joao Pedro. The match began with a bang, as 17-year-old trialist Dastan Satpaev, whose official transfer from FC Kairat is pending until August 12, opened the scoring for Chelsea in just the sixth minute with a spectacular effort. Described by Alonso as “very, very hungry,” Joao Pedro delivered an expert finish from inside the box to equalize, then slotted home to give Chelsea the lead after being set up by Palmer, and finally tapped in his third from a corner to complete a remarkable hat-trick. While the Brazilian forward shone, fellow starting forward Liam Delap continued his struggle for form, raising questions about his future with the club. The performance highlighted a significant gulf between the leagues, but also hinted at the exciting, albeit imperfect, style Alonso aims to implement.
