Andoni Iraola, Liverpool’s new 44-year-old head coach, revealed he was in discussions with other clubs before his quick appointment to the Anfield hot seat. Replacing Arne Slot after a disappointing season where Liverpool finished fifth in the Premier League and suffered a club-record 20 losses across all competitions, Iraola’s move was initiated by Liverpool shortly after the previous season concluded.
Having stepped down from his three-year tenure as Bournemouth manager, Iraola was Liverpool’s primary target following Slot’s dismissal in late May. “It happened quite fast,” he noted, describing the contact from Liverpool as occurring in “the first or second week after the season ended,” leading to a swift acceptance of the role.
The Spaniard’s arrival is intended to usher in a more attacking style of football, a philosophy he attributes to the collective success seen in Basque and Spanish coaching. Speaking from Chicago during Liverpool’s pre-season tour, Iraola highlighted the importance of prioritizing the team over individual ambition, a principle he believes explains the current dominance of coaches from his region across major European and global competitions.
Liverpool’s pre-season schedule in the US includes matches against Sunderland in Nashville, Wrexham in New York, and Leeds United in Chicago, providing Iraola an early opportunity to implement his vision. His approach, rooted in the idea that “things work when we are not just selfish,” aims to rekindle connection, joy, and belief within the squad.
