Iraola Confident in Retaining Key Liverpool Talent
Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola has made it clear he intends to keep star midfielder Alexis Mac Allister and veteran goalkeeper Alisson at Anfield, despite speculation linking both players with moves away. Speaking from Chicago at the outset of the club's pre-season tour in the United States, Iraola emphasized his desire to build upon the existing squad rather than lose established figures.
Mac Allister, the 27-year-old Argentina international, signed a five-year contract in 2023, meaning he has two years remaining on his current deal. While new contract talks have yet to commence, fueling rumors of his potential departure, Iraola was unequivocal. He acknowledged that strong performances, including a standout World Cup showing, naturally attract interest from other clubs, but stated, “I want to keep my good players.”
Similarly, Alisson, the 33-year-old Brazilian goalkeeper, has one year left on his contract and has been connected with Juventus. Iraola expressed satisfaction with his goalkeeping options and highlighted the importance of experienced players like Alisson, Virgil van Dijk, and Joe Gomez as crucial references within the squad.
Beyond player retention, Iraola also indicated a focus on strengthening the team, particularly in defense. He noted that defensive reinforcements are a priority, especially at right-back, given that Conor Bradley is still “months” away from returning to play. Additionally, the squad will be without Hugo Ekitiké for several months.
