Football Icon Kevin Keegan Passes Away at 75
Kevin Keegan, the celebrated former England captain and manager, has died at the age of 75. His family confirmed his passing, revealing he was surrounded by his wife and daughters in his final moments, seven weeks after publicly disclosing a diagnosis of stage four cancer.
Keegan’s illustrious career as a player included stints at Scunthorpe United, Liverpool, Hamburg, Southampton, and Newcastle. He was a decorated figure in English football, notably becoming the only British player to win the prestigious Ballon d’Or twice. He was a central figure in Liverpool’s first European Cup-winning side and later became a messianic figure at Newcastle United both as a player and coach.
Beyond his playing days, Keegan managed Newcastle, Fulham, the England national team, and Manchester City. While some might recall his animated “I’d love it” outburst from 1996, which became a memorable moment in Premier League history, it should not overshadow his extraordinary achievements and influence on the sport.
His family initially shared news of his battle with cancer in January, following evaluations for abdominal symptoms. Newcastle United paid tribute, calling Keegan “one of the most iconic, influential and deeply loved figures in our club’s history,” and acknowledging him as “the beating heart of Newcastle United for generations of supporters.”
