Jeonbuk Football Association Head Under Fire for Criticizing KFA Innovation Committee
Seo Kang-il, president of the Jeonbuk Football Association, is facing significant backlash following his critical remarks aimed at the K-Football Innovation Committee and its prominent figures, Park Ji-sung and Lee Young-pyo. Public outcry has led to a flood of posts on the Jeonbuk Football Association's website, with many demanding his resignation and condemning his statements.
Seo’s comments, made during a recent interview with KBS, directly challenged the qualifications of the committee’s co-chair, Park Ji-sung, and committee member, Lee Young-pyo. He questioned their experience beyond their playing careers, stating, “Park Ji-sung and Lee Young-pyo were national team players in football, but how much life experience do they have, how much do they know about the law, to be on that committee and speak so carelessly?” He suggested they should instead run for association president if they wish to criticize.
His criticism extended to the proposed reforms for the Korea Football Association’s presidential election system. Seo voiced opposition to changing the current regulations, arguing that a larger electoral college would only foster more factions within the football community. He insisted that a by-election should proceed within 60 days according to the existing statutes, rather than amending them.
Despite the growing controversy, some regional football association heads have publicly supported Seo’s stance. These individuals agree that a by-election should be held under the current regulations, aligning with Seo’s view that the innovation committee’s formation and role are problematic. Seo further asserted that while Park Ji-sung and Lee Young-pyo had excellent playing careers, their social and administrative experience is a separate matter.
