The Detroit Tigers extended their winning streak, sweeping the Oakland Athletics 4-1 on Thursday night at Comerica Park. This victory marked the Tigers’ eighth win in their last nine games, while the Athletics continued their downward spiral, dropping their sixth consecutive contest to fall to a 41-52 record, third-worst in the American League.
Oakland’s woes were compounded by an injury to outfielder Zack Gelof, who exited in the third inning after colliding with the fence during a sliding catch. Gelof appeared to injure his right knee on the play.
Detroit’s Framber Valdez delivered a strong performance, striking out the side in the first inning and getting a pair of ground balls in the second. The Athletics attempted an opener strategy with José Suarez, who pitched a perfect first inning, including a strikeout. Jack Perkins then entered as the bulk pitcher, and despite giving up a solo home run to Detroit’s Jake Rogers, he largely kept the Tigers offense in check through his initial innings.
The Tigers’ offense was bolstered by a seventh-inning home run from catcher Eduardo Valencia. The Athletics managed to get on the scoreboard in the fifth inning with a solo home run from Henry Bolte, but it wasn’t enough to prevent the sweep.
