South Korea Confirms Four-Match Friendly Series Amidst Interim Coaching Search
The South Korean national football team has finalized its opponents for the upcoming four-match international friendly series in September and October, facing Ecuador and Uruguay at home next month, followed by Venezuela and Uzbekistan in October. These matches will proceed under an interim coaching arrangement, as the team seeks a permanent replacement for former coach Hong Myung-bo following the 2026 North America World Cup. The Korea Football Association announced the full schedule on the 5th.
The September fixtures, part of the Hana Bank Invitational Friendlies held in South Korea, will see the national team host Ecuador on September 24, just before the Chuseok holiday, and then Uruguay four days later on September 28. Ecuador, currently ranked 25th by FIFA, sits seven spots above South Korea (32nd). They qualified for the North America World Cup after finishing second in the South American qualifiers, conceding only five goals in 18 matches. Historically, South Korea and Ecuador have split their two previous encounters, with their last match being a friendly in Seoul in May 2010.
Following the September matches, South Korea will play Venezuela on October 2 and Uzbekistan on October 6, completing their four-game friendly schedule. The team is actively looking to appoint a temporary coach by August to lead them through this crucial period of international competition.
