Heroes Trounce Eagles in High-Scoring Affair as Hanhwa’s Playoff Hopes Dim
The Kiwoom Heroes delivered a decisive 14-5 defeat to the Hanhwa Eagles at Hanhwa Life Insurance Park in Daejeon on the 16th, marking the Heroes’ escape from a four-game losing streak and their 30th victory of the season. The Eagles, however, saw their winning percentage dip below .500 again, recording their 41st loss against 40 wins and 2 draws, further jeopardizing their hold on sixth place.
Kiwoom’s offense proved relentless, piling up 14 runs against a struggling Hanhwa pitching staff. The Eagles’ attempts at a comeback were highlighted by a three-run homer from third baseman Noh Si-hwan. His shot in the sixth inning, following an RBI single from Moon Hyun-bin, briefly narrowed the deficit after Hanhwa had been trailing 0-5 through five innings.
Noh Si-hwan’s blast came with two outs and runners on first and second, connecting on the second pitch from Kiwoom’s starter, Raul Alcantara, a 153 km/h fastball. Despite this offensive spark, Hanhwa’s pitchers ultimately surrendered 14 runs, allowing Kiwoom to secure a comfortable victory.
The loss places Hanhwa in a precarious position, with their grip on sixth place loosening. With the NC Dinos defeating Doosan 4-2 on the same day, the gap between the sixth and seventh spots has tightened.
