Mancini Returns to Lead Italy Amidst Leadership Shake-Up
Roberto Mancini has been re-appointed as the head coach of the Italian national football team, marking his second stint in the role. This decision comes after a period of instability for the Azzurri, following their failure to qualify for a third consecutive World Cup.
Mancini steps in to replace Gennaro Gattuso, who departed in April. The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) president, Giovanni Malago, expressed confidence in the choice, stating, “I believed that the best person to become head coach was Roberto Mancini.” The appointment was confirmed on Tuesday.
The coaching position saw a significant amount of turnover and controversy before Mancini’s return. Andrea Pirlo was initially slated to take over but withdrew on Monday due to issues concerning his connections to a Russian betting company. Additionally, Pep Guardiola had previously declined the opportunity last month.
Mancini’s previous tenure as Italy’s coach, from 2018 to 2023, included a memorable victory at the European Championship in 2021, where his team defeated England in a penalty shootout at Wembley. He managed Italy for 58 matches during that period and has also coached clubs such as Inter, Fiorentina, and Manchester City, leading the latter to a Premier League title in the 2011-12 season.
In related news, Claudio Ranieri has been named the new technical director, replacing Paolo Maldini, who resigned on Monday. Ranieri, known for guiding Leicester City to the Premier League title in 2016, will now oversee the federation’s technical operations.
